The Belham Primary School set to open in 2015

19 June 2014
Southwark Labour Leader Peter John has welcomed the announcement that The Belham Community Free School has been given approval to open in Peckham.

The Labour council has been working in partnership with Dulwich Hamlet Educational Trust and the local Peckham community to create a new primary school in Peckham. It is hoped the new school will open in the Old Bellenden School building, Bellenden Road.

The new school is set to open for Reception and Year 1 pupils in September 2015. The primary school will open to two forms of Reception class (60 pupils) and one form of Year 1 (30 pupils). When full the school will have capacity for 420 pupils, which will help address the growing demand for primary places in the local area.

The Belham Community Free School will aim to serve a diverse and creative local community and their children, with an aspirational, engaging, broad and balanced curriculum.

Labour Leader of the Council Peter John said:

“We have been working in partnership with the Dulwich Hamlet Junior School and with the local community to create a new primary school in this area and I’m delighted that The Bellenden school will now open in September next year. I want to commend the great work of the Head Teacher of Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, Sonia Case, in bringing this project forward.

“This school will be a great asset to the local community and will bring excellent education to Peckham. This is a further step in our pledge open new schools across the borough to meet demand and to guarantee a local primary place for every child.”
