There’s No Food with Anood

23 January 2015
Cllr Anood Al-Samerai Councillors were left stunned at Council Assembly this week after Leader of Southwark Liberal Democrats, Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, turned on some of Southwark’s hardest working tenants and residents.

At Council Assembly, Cllr Al-Samarai blasted the council over why they were spending money on catering the annual Housing Hero’s Awards.

The Housing Heroes Awards recognise individuals or groups that have made an outstanding contribution to their local area and contributed to improvements in Southwark housing.

The catering for the event came from the council’s Unity Café, run by a charity called the Camden Society which is a social enterprise that uses the money it makes in its cafes to provide training and employment for people with disabilities.
Catering at the Housing Heroes event was cake, sandwiches, tea and coffee – but Cllr Al-Samerai took issue with council spending a penny on our local housing heroes.
Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said:

“The winners have given up hours and hours and hours of their time to improve their area and contribute to their community. Buying them a cup of tea and a slice of cake is the least we can do to say thank you.

“We have to find £33million of savings this year because of cuts that the Liberal Democrats and Tories have imposed on Southwark.  The Lib Dems are living in cloud cuckoo land if they think that depriving these residents of a cheese and pickle sandwich is going to find the savings required to balance our budget.

“I urge Cllr Al-Samerai to apologise and hope she enjoys a helping of humble pie over the shameful way she has behaved.”
