Overwhelming support in Southwark for Bakerloo line extension

31 March 2015
Bakerloo line 99 per cent of residents in Southwark support proposals for an extension of the Bakerloo line, according to Transport for London’s consultation.

2,670 people in Southwark responded to Transport for London’s consultation on the Bakerloo extension – more than any other borough – with 99 per cent supporting the proposals. The consultation also showed strong support for both route options, via Camberwell and Peckham and via the Old Kent Road.

Southwark Labour has long campaigned for the Bakerloo extension, arguing that investment is needed to improve public transport in south London to meet growing demand and anticipated population growth. Southwark Labour is pushing for a two-branch route, via Camberwell and Peckham and down the Old Kent Road.

In total over 15,000 people responded to the consultation, with 96 per cent supporting the extension of the Bakerloo. According to the consultation report, over 50 per cent of respondents thought the extension would provide better connectivity, reduce crowding and congestion on roads and public transport, and help the region’s economic and regeneration opportunities.

Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle said: “Southwark Labour has been campaigning to extend the Bakerloo line for years and the results of this consultation show clearly that it is a key priority for our residents. 99% of people in Southwark support the extension of the Bakerloo line and there is clear support for both routes - through Camberwell and Peckham and the Old Kent Road. We will continue pushing for a two-branch extension to bring much-needed investment to areas under-served by public transport and to support new development.”

Leader of the Council Peter John said: "We have been working with the Mayor of London for two years now to turn our aspiration into a reality and to extend the Bakerloo line south. The community has been fantastic getting behind the plans and arguing passionately for a two spur route through Camberwell and Peckham, and down the Old Kent Road. We will keep working hard with Government, the Mayor and the community until these long overdue trains finally start rolling into their new platforms in Southwark and beyond."
