Cllr Helen Dennis has been appointed Southwark Council’s Mental Health Champion, as part of the local authority Mental Health Challenge, jointly led by seven mental health charities who are working together to improve mental health across England.

Southwark council has signed up to the Mental Health Challenge, committing to support positive mental health, tackle discrimination and work with local partners to reduce inequalities and offer effective support for people with mental health needs.

The role of the Mental Health Champion is to advocate for mental health issues on the council, and to reach out to the local community, to raise awareness and challenge stigma. The role also involves listening to and working with people with personal experiences of mental ill health, identifying priorities and concerns to feed into council policy and strategy.

Cllr Helen Dennis said: “I am delighted to be part of this immensely important initiative - to challenge the stigma which still sadly exists around mental health issues, and to ensure all our residents have access to the best possible services. As a local authority we have a crucial role to play in improving the mental health of everyone in our community – this is an issue that cuts across everything we do and I’m looking forward to hearing people’s experiences and ideas.”
