Catherine Rose and James Coldwell elected in College and Newington wards

12 May 2016
Newington Campaign Catherine Rose and James Coldwell have been elected as Southwark Labour councillors
 in College and Newington wards.

Residents in College and Newington elected the new councillor to replace Neil Coyle MP and Helen Hayes MP, who stand down from their council seats to focus on their parliamentary work for Bermondsey and Old Southwark and Dulwich and West Norwood. The by-elections were held in Newington and College wards on 5 May to coincide with the London Mayoral and Assembly elections.
Catherine Rose is a community campaigner who led the successful parent campaign for new secondary school on the site of the former Dulwich Hospital. Catherine works as a caseworker and is Chair of St John's and St Clement's Primary School PTFA. James Coldwell is a local campaigner in Bermondsey and volunteers for educational charities ReachOut, the Social Mobility Foundation and Childhood First.

Cllr Catherine Rose said: “It is an honour to be elected as a College councillor. I am passionate about delivering improvements for local residents and I hope to bring the knowledge and experience I have gained campaigning for school places in my area to support parents and carers of children in College Ward.”

Cllr James Coldwell said: “It is a real privilege to be elected as a councillor in Newington ward. I will work hard with my Labour colleagues on the council to deliver new homes and jobs for local people in the ward, as well as new facilities, green spaces and transport improvements. I will also fight to ensure regeneration delivers real opportunities for local residents.”

Cllr Peter John, Leader of the Council, said: “I am delighted to welcome Catherine and James as our new Southwark Labour councillors in College and Newington wards. I know that Catherine and James will be great representatives for local residents and will continue the hard work done by Helen Hayes and Neil Coyle over the last six years. Catherine and James have both been fantastic local campaigners, and I look forward to working with them as part of a Labour council delivering a fairer future for residents in Southwark.”

“I would like to thank everyone who took part in this election, including all the volunteers and campaigners who worked hard to get this great result for Labour.”
