Southwark Labour delivering on manifesto commitments in Rotherhithe

01 October 2019
Tonight’s approval of the Canada Water masterplan at Southwark Council’s Planning Committee is a crucial step forward in the delivery of Southwark Labour manifesto commitments. Before the 2018 local elections, Southwark Labour promised to deliver a new leisure centre at Canada Water, and build 1,000 more council homes. Both of these commitments are one step closer to completion thanks to the decision of the planning committee tonight. The Canada Water masterplan will bring new affordable homes and thousands of jobs to the area, along with a state of the art leisure centre with an 8 lane, 25m swimming pool.

Rotherhithe Labour Councillors Stephanie Cryan and Bill Williams said:
“Canada Water residents have suffered from years of austerity under this Tory Government, and this masterplan will bring much needed investment into the area. The affordable and family housing in the Canada Water masterplan will help people who grew up locally to stay in the area and keep our community together.

“The benefits of the Canada Water masterplan are clear, which is why we as local councillors have backed it from the start.”

Councillor Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning, and Councillor Leo Pollak, Cabinet Member for Social Regeneration, Great Estates and New Council Homes said:
“The Canada Water masterplan will help us to deliver the affordable and council rent homes that our borough needs, and invest in the whole Canada Water area. We’re proud to be delivering our manifesto commitments and creating a fairer future for all in Canada Water.”
